The children who call HCH their home come from many different backgrounds. Most
are orphans; some have living parents who, due to physical or mental illness, are unable to care for them. Prior to coming to the home the children lived in desperate circumstances. Many lived on the streets, scrounging for food and often in danger. The children are brought to HCH by the police or social services and they are welcomed into the HCH family. The transition can be difficult as they must learn to trust and live by new rules. For some of them it is the first time they have been in a loving and secure environment. HCH is not an institution, it is their home, and they consider each other brother and sister. While no one can replace their parents the staff at HCH are like loving aunts, uncles and grandparents.
